XJTISS国际暑校Frontiers in Biosensor and Biodetection

Introduction

Biosensing and detection technology is a critical area in modern science and engineering, aiming to integrate biological recognition elements with physical or chemical sensors to achieve highly sensitive and specific detection of biomolecules, pathogens, and environmental pollutants.

This course will introduce key scientific and technological issues in the field of biosensing and detection, providing theoretical and technical guidance for improving healthcare services. It will provide fundamental knowledge across multiple areas, including micro/nano sensing, biological detection, and instrumentation science.

All students and teachers interested in biosensor and biodetection are welcomed!

International Teaching Group


Professor Xueyong Wei

Prof. Xueyong Wei received his PhD. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Birmingham in 2009, and then he worked in the University of Cambridge as research associate before joined Xi’an Jiaotong University in 2012. Currently, he is the head of School of Instrument Science and Technology and the leader of Shaanxi Innovation Team on Micro/Nano Sensing and Measurement Technology. His main research interests include micro/nano sensing and testing. In this field, he has published over 150 papers and 50 patents. He has won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the first prize of the Shaanxi Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, the first prize of the Shaanxi Higher Education Teaching Achievement Award, the first prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award of the China Instrument and Control Society, the first prize of the Science and Technology Award of the Shaanxi Provincial Institute of Mechanical Engineering, the Shaanxi Youth Science and Technology Award, and the FK Bannister Award of the University of Birmingham.

Professor Tao Dong

Tao Dong is a Professor at Xi’an Jiaotong University and has previously served as an Applied Microsystems Professor and Head of the Biomechanical Microelectromechanical Systems Research Group at the Department of Microsystems at Southeast University in Norway. He has published over 160 journal articles in prestigious journals, such as Biosensors & Bioelectronics, Chemistry of Materials, Analytical Chemistry, Advanced Materials Interfaces, Analyst, Annals of Biomedical Engineering, IEEE Transactions of Biomedical Circuits and Systems, Energy Conversion and Management, International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, and numerous conference papers. His inventions have led to 16 patents granted in Norway, the UK, China, and worldwide.

Professor Ryutaro MAEDA

Professor Ryutaro MAEDA, currently affiliated with the School of Instrument Science and Technology in Xi’an Jiaotong University, is also Distinguished Emeritus Researcher at The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST). He joined to AIST in Tsukuba in 1980, after finishing Master course in Graduate School of Tokyo University. He served as Director of UMEMSME (Research Centre of Ubiquitous MEMS and Micro Engineering) in AIST from 2010 to 2015 and served as Leader of several National Projects, such as “Green Sensor Network”, JST CREST program, FIRST program, JSPS etc. His current research interest includes application of wireless networked sensing for energy and safety management. He published more than 250 papers in MEMS and related fields.

Professor Jose Higino Correia

Prof. Jose Higino Correia graduated in Physical Engineering from University of Coimbra, Portugal in 1990. He obtained in 1999 a PhD degree at the Laboratory for Electronic Instrumentation, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands, working in the field of microsystems for optical spectral analysis. Presently, he is a Full Professor in Department of Industrial Electronics, University of Minho, Portugal. He was the General-Chairman of Eurosensors 2003 and MME 2007, Guimar?es, Portugal. His professional interests are in micromachining and microfabrication technology for mixed-mode systems, solid-state integrated sensors, microactuators and microsystems. Prof. Correia was awarded with more than 20 grants with funding over a 1 million EUR to date, financed by the European Commission, FP6 and FP7th Framework and Horizon2020, and by the Foundation for Science and Technology, Ministry of Science, Technology, and Higher Education of Portugal.

Associate Professor Lang Nan

Lang Nan is currently serving as an associate professor in the School of Instrument Science and Technology at Xi’an Jiaotong University. He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Hong Kong in 2021. His research interests include droplet-based microfluidics, point-of-care testing, and biomedical engineering. In this field, he has published over 10 papers in Nature Biomedical Engineering, Small, etc. top journal and applied 13 international patents.

Professor Li Zhang

Li Zhang is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering (MAE) and a Professor by Courtesy in the Department of Surgery at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). His main research interests include small-scale robotics, from individual and multiple robots to swarms, and their applications for translational biomedicine. He has authored or co-authored over 300 publications, including Science Robotics, Nature Machine Intelligence, Science Advances, Nature Communications, Advanced Materials, Matter, ACS Nano, AFM, TRO, IJRR, SoRo, Annual Review of Control, Robotics, and Autonomous Systems, as the corresponding author. Dr. Zhang is an Outstanding Fellow of the Faculty of Engineering at CUHK and elected as a Fellow of IEEE (FIEEE), Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) and Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association (FAAIA).

Professor Nuno Miguel Matos Pires

Nuno Miguel Matos Pires is a Portuguese scientist who has dedicated his career to the research of integrated lab-on-a-chip technology using organic semiconductor electrodes for the ultra-sensitive detection of biomarkers associated with chronic and infectious diseases. His focus lies particularly on the photoelectronic sensing properties of organic semiconductors, biosensor mechanisms, and integrated chip applications. He has authored and co-authored over 40 academic articles in the field of semiconductor photoelectronic integrated lab-on-a-chip research, which have been published in high-impact international journals such as Advanced Science, Biosensors & Bioelectronics, Journal of Biomedical Optics, Analyst and Lab on a Chip.

Professor Danilo Demarchi

Danilo Demarchi is Full Professor at the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications of Politecnico di Torino, Italy. He founded and directs the Integrated BioSystems Laboratory (IBS Lab), a leading European facility for biomedical microsystems and bioelectronics. Recognized as an IEEE Fellow (2020) for pioneering contributions to implantable neuro-devices and ultra-low-power biosensors, he serves on the European Commission’s Horizon Europe Advisory Board for Neurotechnologies and chairs Italy’s National Committee for Bioelectronics Standards. Previously, he held the position of Vice-Head of the Department of Electronics. Prof. Demarchi specializes in designing intelligent biomedical microsystems, with expertise spanning implantable neural interfaces, wearable health monitors, and energy-efficient integrated circuits.
